There are times when it seems that our strength is utterly depleted. We battle just to muster up a prayer or a simple song of praise. When we take our eyes off the Lord of our salvation, we easily become consumed with the cares of this world. Problems, issues, situations, mishaps, misfortunes, burdens... all of these things have the potential to shake our faith and shift our focus. If we are not careful, these things will even cause changes in our physical appearance. Have you ever been around someone who was "going through" terribly? What did that look like? Sloppy dress, poor alignment of priorities, sluggish posture... What did it sound like? Complaining, whining, nagging, negativity, hopelessness, despair...
"Going through" does not have to be done "terribly". Jesus is our a perfect example. He was able to endure great trials because He clearly understood the difference between the temporal and eternal. In order to fulfill His purpose in the earth and reach His ultimate destiny, He had to go through some things. He knew these things would not last, but were of certain necessity. He had to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament that were spoken concerning His life. A few are listed below:
Despised and rejected – Isaiah 53:3
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”
Betrayed by Judas – Psalm 41:9
“Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”
Falsely accused – Psalm 35:11
“False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.”
Spat upon – Isaiah 50:6
“I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.”
Hated without cause – Psalm 35:19
“Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.”
Mocked – Psalm 22:7-8
“All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.”
Carried our sin – Isaiah 53:6
“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
Yet, in all of this, Jesus endured. He is our perfect example. The next time you begin to feel overwhelmed, open your mouth and break out in an earnest praise. Watch God show up on your behalf.
"The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation."
